When you’re starting out in your career, the biggest question is often the simplest: “Where can this job actually take me?” At CTS, that question has a clear answer and the journey of people like Matt Mills shows exactly what’s possible when you begin your career as a site technician and decide to grow with us.
After eight and a half years with CTS, Matt has gone from a young technician learning the ropes to a confident, capable manager leading teams, supporting major expansions, and actively preparing himself for senior leadership. His journey is one of loyalty, ambition, and the willingness to continually evolve.
Starting Out as a Technician: Where Real Growth Begins
Many people join CTS as technicians, and for some it’s the first step into the world of construction testing and site work. It’s hands-on, fast-paced and offers genuine exposure to how projects operate from the ground up. Matt started his journey the same way.
Those early years gave him the foundation for everything that came after. By working closely with experienced colleagues, taking on new tasks and understanding how operations run day to day, he built the type of practical knowledge that creates strong managers. As Matt puts it, the role gave him “the experience and insight” that he now uses at a higher level.
Building Skills and Confidence Through Continuous Development
Over time, Matt took on more responsibility, supported teams, and stepped into leadership positions because he had the tools and encouragement to do so. Eventually he began studying for his Level 5 Operations Manager qualification something he chose to solidify his experience and strengthen his long-term prospects.
“I wanted a paper trail of the experience I’ve gained so far,” he says, “and something to help progress my career.”
Turning Experience Into Leadership Through Real Projects
Career progression isn’t just about qualifications. It’s about the moments where you’re trusted to step up and make an impact. For Matt, one of those moments came during the expansion of the Heathrow unit.
“The move of Heathrow was definitely a challenge,” Matt explains, “but using newly learned strategies gave us clarity and structure to make sure everything went to plan.”
A Clear Path to the Future
As Matt reflects on his development, his confidence has grown alongside his responsibilities. His qualification has strengthened how he leads, how he plans and how he supports his team. More importantly, it has helped him shape a clear vision for his future.
“Hopefully in a directorship role, that’s a goal of mine,” he says.
This is the type of progression young technicians and early-career professionals can achieve at CTS. With the right mindset, the right support and the willingness to learn, a technician role can grow into something much bigger, whether that’s management, senior leadership or specialised expertise.
CTS is committed to helping ambitious people reach their potential. With internal and external training always available, structured pathways, and opportunities to take on projects that genuinely matter, your career can develop as quickly as you’re ready to take the next step.
